James Plant, Barrister at Law
I am a barrister specialising in Personal Injury, Product Liability and general tortious and/or contractual disputes. I represent individuals, businesses, organisations and insurance companies upon instruction from solicitors and also from members of the public (by Public Access).

I grew up in York before moving to London in 2000. I worked for a PR firm before a change of direction and retraining to be a barrister (law conversion, Bar School and pupillage). I have been a barrister at Farrar’s Building in the Temple since 2005.

I moved back to York in 2014 and now live near Sheriff Hutton where my wife and I are slowly but surely renovating a farmhouse and learning how to garden! When I’m not at work I can usually be found puzzling over a power tool or swinging a spade… I also enjoy weight training, running and cooking (sadly not in that order) and, whenever I can, indulge my passion for antiques by rummaging through flea markets, auctions and junk shops.
Picture herel
I mainly work from home but represent clients in court nationwide – one day is very different from the next and I split my time between advocacy in court, drafting and advising. I pride myself on being modern, flexible and approachable and I am always happy to discuss cases with my clients informally as well as acting on formal instructions.

I am a new member of Network York having joined towards the end of 2015. I was looking to meet like-minded individuals, expand my network and learn how other businesses operate and grow. I attended as a guest member one month and immediately signed up!

The group was extremely sociable and welcoming from the off. There are members who, through the group, are colleagues but also firm friends yet it never feels cliquey. What is most striking is that every member is genuinely supportive and encouraging of the businesses and ideas of other members. If one person raises a problem or spots an opportunity there is always a raft of suggested solutions or recommended people to contact.

In only a short amount of time I have been referred work for new clients, have recommended people I know to members of the group and have recommended members to people I know. Every week business is conducted between members but also between members and people they know outside of the group.

In short it’s a network that works.

Chelle Thirsk M.D. CGA

Member: Chelle Thirsk M.D. CGA

Chartered Certified Accountants and Taxation Advisors (with a difference)

On the 26
th July 1991 I began work at CGA.  In those days it was files as far as the eye could see and one computer shyly sulking in the corner.  Many years later (too many) – having taken the helm in 1998 -  our paperless office and flourishing client list means that I still enjoy coming to work each and every day. But there is still so much more to achieve for both CGA and our clients.
Picture herel
There is no place that I would rather be than at my desk or sitting on one of our comfy sofas, coffee in hand, advising clients from a full spectrum of regional businesses.  I am a self-confessed ‘doer’ and am enjoying working my way through a rather long bucket list, having ticked off a 15,000 feet parachute jump, fire walking and zorbing, there is still much to go! As a Zumba and Fight Fit addict, a good bottle of wine and a thriller make a relaxing change.

My interests are Horse Racing, Rugby Union and Music Festivals and Gigs

“I have been a member of Network York for 3 years and I find it to be professional, friendly and informal. It offers the opportunity to share ideas and to benefit from the experiences of other professionals.  The size and structure of the network means that we really get to build strong relationships, the foundations of which ensure that business gets done within the group wherever possible.”

On leaving school I embarked on a successful and happy career with HSBC Bank, now having almost 30 years’ experience in the financial services industry.
As a qualified Financial Advisor I have a wealth of experience advising clients in all areas of financial planning but in particular now focus on working with clients who wish to review their protection needs. I also specialise in helping Employers who wish to provide employee benefits to their staff.

I am proud to be a qualified adviser and hold the Chartered Insurance Institute Diploma in Financial Planning and the Chartered Institute of Bankers Certificate in Mortgage Advice and Practice.

Picture herel
Following redundancy 6 years ago, I seized the opportunity to leave what was becoming a very ‘sales’ driven environment and moved into the world of self-employment. This has given me the chance to focus on building true relationships with my clients, getting to know and understand exactly what their individual needs are and advising them accordingly in all areas of protection – these being life insurance, critical illness cover, income protection, medical insurance and health cash plans, along with funeral plans. Based on client feedback I can now also advise clients who wish to make a Will, and/or set up Powers of Attorney.

I work with a range of clients, who vary from Individuals and Families, right through to Sole Trader owner managed businesses, Partnerships and Limited Companies and I take great pride in giving my clients peace of mind.
